Conemaugh Township Hires School Resource Officer

At the June 2017 meeting of the Conemaugh Township Board of School Directors, Mr. Michael Buncich was hired into the newly created school resource officer (SRO) position. The district created this position in an effort to provide an added layer of security for the students and staff of the district. The SRO will spend time at the middle/high school and elementary school on a daily basis. Some of the primary responsibilities of this position will be as follows:

  • Foster, develop, and maintain open lines of communication to achieve a positive and safelearning environment between students, faculty, parents, and local and state police officers.
  • Assist with and provide advice pertaining to crime prevention programs aimed at young persons and develop and implement periodic programs for youth.
  • Serve as school liaison officer, providing guidance on ethical issues in the classroom setting.
  • Promote a safe and drug free environment within the school district.
  • Assist with the enforcement of laws pertaining to: possession, use, or sale of controlled substances, including alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; weapons violations; truancy laws; assaults committed by or upon students; and children at risk of destructive behaviors in a crisis situation.

Mike is a lifelong resident of Conemaugh Township, and he is recently retired from the Pennsylvania State Police with 25 years of service. Mike most recently served as a resource officer for the Windber Area School District during the 2016-17 school year. We feel very fortunate to have Mike coming on board; with his background and experience, he will be a very valuable asset for the entire district.
