Our School

Conemaugh Township Area Elementary is known for its academic success and physical and artistic endeavors. With the help of highly qualified faculty and staff members, we’re fortunate to have received several awards and honors. Our town is also proud to have a long history of academic excellence. Read on to find out a little bit about our school history.

Our School History

Conemaugh Township was established from Quemahoning in February 1801 and was named for the river and the Indian word meaning “Otter Creek.” Within its borders lie the boroughs of Benson, Hollsopple, Bens Creek, Kring, Mishler, Border, Davidsville, Thomas Mills, Foustwell, and Jerome.

In 1833, a log schoolhouse was built in Maple Swamp near the village of Davidsville. Eventually the number grew to include twelve grade schools located throughout the Township. In October of 1938 the elementary schools were consolidated into six schools. On February 1, 1959, groundbreaking ceremonies were held simultaneously at the high school (addition of North wing), Central, and Jerome.

Central Elementary opened its doors on September 7, 1960, to 680 pupils who were enrolled through the 6th grade. It was a beautiful cluster-type structure of unusual design for the area during this time period and featured modern furniture, a separate cafeteria, and a multi-purpose room.

In 1990 the building was remodeled and enlarged. The Jerome primary school and intermediate school combined in 2011. The elementary school now serves approximately 425 students in grades K–5. The middle/senior high school serves students in grades 6–12.
